Auditions for College, Festivals & Workshops
As your high school senior decides which music school to apply to, pay
attention to the application requirements. While visiting the school for a live audition
gives your student the opportunity to meet the professor(s) and assess the campus, the
costs and time required for multiple auditions can be prohibitive. Most schools will
accept the submission of a CD of the performance of audition material in lieu of a live audition.
We will record your students performance; edit for proper formatting*, and create a laser-etched labeled CD for submission.
*Audio can only be edited for formatting. CONTENT CANNOT BE EDITED FOR AUDITION CDs
We have AUDITION packages available. Book early as we fill up quickly
during the fall college application season.

Just because we're not in a studio dos not mean we do not use studio grade equipment.
We incorporate high quality, high tech gear to digitally capture all of the nuances of your
performance.
We can also set it up to provide same day CDs to groups at your hosted Festivals & Competitions.

Mastering
Adjusts amplitudes to provide the optimum listening experience.
Otherwise, the listener may have to raise the volume up quite a bit.
Recording at a level much louder than this can cause distortion on accented notes, or loud passages. It is much more preferred to raise the amplitudes at a later time, as distortion can not be fixed or undone.>
Audio normalization lets you keep the volume at slightly saner levels. When sounds get too loud, it reduces the volume, and when it's too soft, the volume is increased a little. Audio normalization makes for a bit nicer listening.
After a voice, instrument, or sound effect is recorded, it goes through a process called CD mastering that makes it ready for its final state, or master copy. The master copy is then used to reproduce the production into usable media, such as the compact discs purchased every day by consumers.
A lot of changes, balancing, and decision-making go into the production during mastering. The first stage is preparation. Preparation techniques include:

Pricing varies from project to project with my mobile recording operation. I will give some basics at the bottom of this page that will be a starting point.
There are just too many variables that come into play when recording on location to set concrete pricing. I will say as a musician myself I understand the need for quality pro sounding tracks at a price that won't sink you.
The best thing to do is contact me with your needs. The more advanced notice we have the better the outcome.
Example 1:
: Lets say you are a 4 piece band and I have to drive under an hour to your gig. Lets say your gig is a total of 4 hours total time there after set up. 9 pm - 1am. That means we all get to the gig at no later than 1 1/2 hours before show time to set up for the recording and your band. That's the only safe way to be sure you start on time. (if you can not make it to set up on time I can not be accountable for you not going on on time and I still get paid in full for whatever does get recorded) For just Audio to be recorded on this night it will cost you $250.00. Payment will be made in cash upon arrival before set up. Now lets say all went according to plan. I will supply you with quick mixes (the following day or so) of the songs you played to see if you like your performance enough to translate into a better sounding mix. That is what is included in the initial 250.00. Once you pick the songs you like there is a 25.00 an hour charge for me to mix them into something that sounds really good. In most cases this can be done in around 10 hours or less. So you can have a quality live recording of your band for about 500.00 bucks in this situation. If you would like a one still camera shot of the band playing tack on another $ 50.00 dollars for the set up (provided there is someplace safe to do so) and plan on a few more hours of editing time.
Example 2 will be based on me going to your rehearsal space.
The set up time is the same as a live gig, 1 1/2 hours before actual playing time. That time is on me as is the breakdown time. $250.00 is the price for 4 hours of recording time and is the minimal price to get me out the door.. If things are really grooving and playing is going great I am willing to go an extra hour or so without charge for the music. After all I understand as a musician the pain of the current economy. Also if you only need lets say an hour of recording time then I am willing to apply some of the $250.00 initial cost to mixing and editing. I will be the deciding on how much. Now if you would like stationary cameras on location as well there will be a charge of $50.00 per camera with a 4 camera limit.. After all recording is done. I will head back to my editing station, make sure all audio and video are in tact and inform you of that. In the event somehow I had a problem with my gear I will refund the initial money you shelled out for me to record you. If all is in tact then I will provide you with semi good quality audio tracks to see if you like your performance. Once you decide what you like we will go into editing phase.
Graphic Design
Smooth Sound Studios' will work with you to create a stylish, well conceived CD package that will establish a professional presence and at a reasonable price. A typical 4 panel design is about $350.
Sound Design
Smooth Sound Studios has created original sound designs which can be used for T.V, Video games, Web Design and Live Events.
From a single custom sound effect for your website to full feature length sound design and foley; we can meet all your audio needs.
Scoring / Notation
We can transcribe your handwritten score to be "publication ready". Using the industry standard Finale® software we will make your scores as pretty to read as your music is pretty to hear.
Composing
Original Scores for Film/TV, Radio, Video Games and Online Media:
Smooth Sound Studios will create vibrant original scores for documentary and dramatic feature films, student projects, multi-media and museum exhibits, corporate media projects and videos, instructional videos and shorts, such as those used in visitor centers of national parks. Each project can be adapted to your budget.

Our History
It all started with a TrueTone "portable" reel-to-reel
recorder I borrowed from my grandfather; recording and splicing my own radio shows.
Then I moved on to the student-run college radio station - this time recording and
splicing tapes for a real radio show. Moving on to the excitement of the first stereo,
recording Realistic® cassette deck.
My interest in music has been alive and growing since
piano lessons in 3rd grade, numerous brass instruments and keyboards
in multiple bands in multiple states.
Fast forward to my kids performing in various bands and festivals with no one
recording these performances! So I decided I would; and the rest is the historic present.
I transfer my love of music and knowledge of the audio recording process to the details
I use in recording your music for you.
